There was good news and not so good news for farmers on the weather front for April. The good news is that Jefferson received about 3/4ths of an inch more rain than normal, with 4.1 inches of the wet stuff. In a drought cycle, that’s almost like gold.
The not so good news is that it rained on 11 different days, putting farmers behind in their fieldwork. The National Agriculture Statistics Service updates its weekly reports on Mondays, but as of last Sunday, corn planting in west central Iowa was 6 percent behind average.
Despite the very welcome April showers, most of Greene County remains in severe drought conditions, according to the National Weather Service.
